The rate of change in the nonprofit sector is staggering and accelerating. These changes—for example, economic, cultural, and legislative—are impacting nonprofit organizations on multiple levels. The challenges resulting from these changes present leaders with complex leadership decisions that potentially impact not only the success of critical short-term goals, but may also determine if their teams and organizations are ready to deal with an uncertain and often unpredictable future.
The critical skill needed to navigate these and other disruptive/transformative changes, and to turn the challenges and risks of rapid change into opportunities, is change leadership.
The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to The Seven Critical Conversations, a powerful framework and process for change leaders to assess the current state of their organizations, define an ideal future state, and then to create clear, actionable change initiatives for attaining that desired future state.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have a greater understanding of some of the critical components in the change process and have begun mastering some of the key capabilities that are essential for leading change:
- Using data to assess the current state and to define the conditions for an ideal future state, and identifying the sequence of milestones and priority investments on the journey to attaining that future state.
- Identifying the primary constraint to team effectiveness, allowing the highest-return investments to be made for achieving a higher level of performance.
Bob Voss, PhD, has been a senior consultant at the consulting firm Growth River for five years. He works with nonprofit leaders to help them resolve a common constraint to leader, team, and business performance: developing the capability of leaders and teams to navigate disruptive change. This work is critical, because ultimately organizations grow at the speed their leaders develop this capability. The capacity to do this is called change leadership. Bob has extensive experience as an executive, teacher, trainer, and technical writer. He served at the global nonprofit organization EnlightenNext as CEO, COO, and Board member. Bob has presented seminars on change leadership at the 2013 AFP National Philanthropy Day conference, the Mass Nonprofit Network 2014 Annual Conference, the 2016 Planned Giving Group of New England Conference and the AFP MA Chapter 2016 Annual Conference. Trained in whole-systems thinking, Bob earned his PhD in Insect Ecology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He also spent many years working as a software trainer, consultant and co-author of several best-selling software books.
